Domain Slamming

Alert graphic

Domain scams are attempts to trick organizations into subscribing to a domain registration service. The owner of the domain may think that they are merely a renewing the domain and will send funds to the scammer. This service does not exist and is a fake service created to get people’s money.

The letters look very official but read carefully. This is predatory behavior, and there will be a section that states ‘THIS IS NOT A BILL. THIS IS A SOLICITATION.’ That way, it makes it more difficult for authorities to come after the scammer for their bad practices.

If you receive one of these letters, throw it away. It’s a scam. If you are worried about your information being publicly available, sign up for a domain privacy service, which will make it more difficult for these crooks to target you.

Domain registrars and hosting platforms don’t send out letters of this kind. Billing notices are sent via email.
