The cybersecurity industry has been suffering a critical shortage of talent for quite some time. It is reported that there is a global shortage of 3.4 million cybersecurity professionals.

Cybersecurity careers can be challenging and rewarding. The role can be dependent on specific skills or general knowledge. Most industries are looking for particular forms of expertise, with few entry level positions being offered. When seeking a job in cybersecurity, it is important to understand where your competencies lie.

In order to secure a cybersecurity position it is necessary to take the steps to prepare and educate yourself. There are several strides to take to place yourself as a favorable candidate.

  • Research the company. Knowledge of what they do and where your competency lies will assist in your seeking a position within their organization.
  • Demonstrate a passion for a cybersecurity role. Get involved in cybersecurity groups and forums. Attend conferences and webinars. Prove yourself as a leader by contributing to publications and conference sessions.
  • Show your willingness to learn. Express your desire to gain new skills and adapt for the organization’s environment.
  • Get accredited and gain skills needed through certifications. This does not necessarily mean though a university. There are several well respected programs through which certifications can be obtained.
  • Highlight your skills and knowledge. Be specific about the tools you use. Play up your soft skills as well. Let the employer know that you are a team player, willing and cooperative.

A career in cybersecurity can be lucrative and rewarding. Don’t give up. Consider internships and lower level entry positions in order to get your foot in the door and prove yourself. Everyone has to start somewhere so if this is the path you want to follow, ready yourself for the journey.
