Cybersecurity Awareness Month – Week Four

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

This year’s theme is “See Yourself in Cyber” and focuses on the people aspect of cybersecurity. We can all do our part to keep ourselves, our families, our organization and our data safe from cyber crime. This week’s focus is updating your software.

There are lots of reasons why you should keep your software up to date. Without updates, you run the risk of older software not functioning properly on newer hardware. Software updates not only contain enhancements but also are important for security. Many times the updates include security patches that can reduce vulnerabilities and protect your data.

Software you should update:

  • Any software on your devices should be kept up to date to curb attackers from take advantage of vulnerabilities.
  • Operating systems should be patched on a regular basis. When an update is available, apply it in a timely manner.
  • Don’t forget your browsers. Popular browsers will alert you when there is a new update.
  • Keep your apps patched, too. If you no longer use an app, delete it.

Software updates tend to get overlooked.
